Jimmie Vaughan no longer living the blues

By John D'Aquila

Like many true blues-men, Jimmie Vaughan has spent time living and playing the blues.

You will excuse him if he is only doing the latter of late.

Vaughan plays at Tipitina's Uptown Friday, September 27, along with special guest

Lou Ann Barton.

After years of playing with The Fabulous Thunderbirds and his more famous younger brother, the legendary blues guitarist, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie has found his niche as a solo artist.

Following his cathartic first solo album, Strange Pleasure, a tribute to his brother, the 47-

year old Jimmie thought he was "back on the other side of the street," a quote from a 1998 interview with the Boston Globe when he released Out There.

With his latest effort, Do You Have The Blues?, Vaughan has clearly moved to a an entirely different street as the record is described as a more "honed" effort than anything he has done in the past.

That is reflected in the fact the record earned him his fourth Grammy Award, for Best Traditional Blues Album at the 2002 Grammy show.

Scofield still learning after all these years

Walter's act
Party waiting
To happen

If you listen to All Music Guide's description of Robert Walter's 20th Congress' tones (energetic, fun, organic, earthy, exuberant, carefree, party/celebratory), well, it might just be a party waiting to happen.

And guess what? Walter and Co. will be at Tipitina's Uptown to party Thursday, Sept. 19. Om Trio opens.

Although he is only 30 years old, Walter is becoming a force to be reckoned with among touring bands across America.

John Scofield is clearly the beneficiary and product of a bevy of musical influences.

While considered a jazz player, his influences include rock, R&B, soul, jazz, old players like Miles Davis and young players like Medeski, Martin and Wood.

That cornucopia of musical fruit will be on display at Tipitina's Uptown Saturday, September 28 with Topaz opening a promising night of music.

Scofield's sound is described by the All Music Guide as "somewhere between post-bop, fusion, and soul jazz." His most recent work has had a clear focus on a return to jazz mixed with the music of sixties R&B,

which makes for a groove rich sound.

"After having the chance to play with many of my musical idols - I'm getting inspiration from younger musicians," he goes on to write. "I am as excited about writing and playing music as I have ever been."
