Hungry? How about some "GumboGrass"
Uptown Okra brings a fresh sound to the New Orleans music scene by combining
the traditional instruments of Appalachia with the lowland sounds of New
Orleans. The combination of mandolin, banjo and guitar, backed by the
driving rhythms of an upright bass and drum kit result in "GumboGrass,"
which describes this band's sound -- a mixed pot of Latin, funk, and New
Orleans R&B served over a bed of bluegrass. Three singers, all sharing
lead and harmony vocals in English and Spanish, create a full, well-balanced
sound. The band dedicates itself to both original and cover songs. Uptown
Okra is comprised of Nicholas Backer on mandolin/vocals, Steve Kierniesky
on banjo/vocals, Lehman Sammons on drums, Brian Siegel on guitar/vocals,
and Sam Price on bass.
