Here is a band that is destined to go placesOne of the hottest bands with one of the hippest scenes in town, Papaa Grows Funk, only a year old, is going places. With their first CD, Doin' It, already highly touted my music lovers and critics alike, this band seems destined for not only national recognition, but dare we say it, the heir to the throne of funk held by such luminaries as The Meters and The Neville Brothers. In fact, at a Meters reunion show in San Francisco in November of 2000, PGF played for the after hours party and Art Neville, as a tip of his hat to the newest in a long line of funky New Orleans bands, sat in for a spell. Although the band's lineup is stellar, John Gros on Hammond B3 Organ, Russell Batiste on drums, June Yamagishi on guitar, Jason Mingledorff on saxaphone, and alternating bassist Marc Pero and Peter V., one never seems to know who might sit in with the group during a gig: Henry Butler, George Porter, Jr., Mark Mullins of MuleBone, Robert Mercurio of Galactic, and Camile Baudoin of the Radiators have all sat in at various times. |
