A very special evening of Cuban music
Tipitina's, at 501 Napoleon Avenue, presents a special evening of local
Cuban music to celebrate the closing party of MADE IN CUBA, Contemporary
Art From Cuba 2002, at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, 841 Carondelet Street,
on Saturday, March 23rd beginning at 10:00 PM. Artists performing include
Los Vecinos, Vivaz, Chevere, and The Voodoo Museum Drummers. The night will
be a festive occasion where the creative energy of Cuban art and music join
forces at New Orleans historic music venue. Gallery owner Jonathan Ferrara
and co-curator Damian Aquiles have assembled one of the finest contemporary
Cuban art exhibitions to debut in New Orleans. Ferrara lends this perspective:
"Made in Cuba is not just an exhibition of Cuban art, it is a process, a
discovery and a collaboration. Faith in art and the creative process brought
me to Cuba. What I found there was an artists' utopia…an isolated environment
filled with thriving intellectual artists in the midst of the economic struggle
and social restraint that is life in Cuba today." The exhibition opened
to the public with thousands attending the opening reception and will be
on exhibit March 2nd - March 30th , 2002 at the gallery. Los Vecinos ("The
Neighbors") is a six-piece aggregation that specializes in traditional Cuban
music. The group performs original material, from their debut Guajira in
Cyberspace, and covers music by Cuban luminaries like Cachao and Buena Vista
Social Club. Javier Gutierrez, leader of Acoustic Swiftness, created his
new salsa band Vivaz to express his native music in a bolder context. This
large ensemble includes a tres guitar (a traditional Cuban instrument),
multiple percussionists, a power house brass section, and the lyrical voice
of Javier Gutierrez. Chevere are an exciting new Afro-Cuban group, formed
by pianist David Ellington, their debut Baila Mi Ritmo is an inspired record
voted top 20 albums of 2000 by the Times Picayune. The New Orleans Voodoo
Museum Drummers will perform between sets. Special thanks to the Jonathan
