Some raunchy guitar playing and wild drumming
Few contemporary rock bands have the confidence to let their mother write
their bios, but Illinois-based power rock duo LOCAL H has survived corporate
takeovers and band-member entropy so mom's views are the least of their
worries. LOCAL H's sound combines the raunchy guitar playing of Scott Lucas
and the wild drumming of Brian St. Clair. Lucas formed the band in high
school and recorded three albums for Island Records: Ham-Fisted in 1995,
As Good As Dead in 1996, and Pack up the Cats in 1998. Following Seagram's
purchase of Polygram, and the other original members jumping ship, Lucas
was left with no record deal and no band members. In a demonstration of
sheer persistence, Lucas developed a guitar technique, with the aid of a
special pickup, to play bass and guitar simultaneously. He hired drummer
Brian St. Clair, formerly of Triple Fast Action, to play drums and landed
a deal with new label Palm Pictures. Their forthcoming release, Here Comes
the Zoo (Palm Pictures), produced by Jack Douglas, who has polished up the
sounds of Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Patty Smith, and John Lennon, will be
released in March 2002. Douglas' nimble production lends a hard rocking
sheen to Local H's primitive style by layering Lucas' powerful vocals and
marinating his guitar in heavy reverb on tracks like "Half-life" and "Tame
Me." The album includes special guests Josh Homme (from Queens of the Stone
Age), Jerry Only (of Misits), Shanna Kiel (of Sullen), and Simantha Sernaker
(of Simi). Local H has a powerful live sound as a duo with the punch of
a full band. The Here Comes the Zoo Tour will stop in New Orleans at the
original TIPITINA'S Uptown, 501 Napoleon, Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 10:30
PM. Newcomers Chevelle and Burning Brides opens the show. |
