James Andrews
Tipitina's Artist A true disciple this "Satchmo of the Ghetto"
James comes from a musician family which includes the guitarist for Smiley Lewis, Walter Nelson, Walter Nelson Jr., guitarist for Fats Domino, the legendary Prince LaLa, and Herlin Riley, drummer for Wynton Marsalis.

James was given his first trumpet by his uncle, Lionel Batiste at a young age and spent most of his time learning from the greats at Preservation Hall. James played in numerous Brass Bands including the Roots of Jazz Brass Band, formed by Danny Barker. One of his band mates at the time was Nicholas Payton. He then formed his own band the, the All Star Brass Band and later played with the Treme Brass Band. He toured the world and developed into one of the most experienced and influential jazz musicians in New Orleans. In 1995 James became the lead trumpeter and singer of the New Birth Brass Band, a brass band supergroup with member s of the ReBirth, Young Olympia, Dirty Dozen, Lil' Rascals and Treme. In 1997, at age 27, James recorded Satchmo of the Ghetto, his first solo album with Allen Toussaint as producer. The album is a great blend of the older brass band styles as well some of the soul/funk styles of the 70's pioneered by Toussaint. Of James Toussaint says, "As hip as he is, James is truly a disciple . This music is very dear to him."
