Sultry singer can't give you
anything but love
Tipitina's own Ellen Rogers is jazzy. An Eddie Bo discovery, Rogers
has as many visual curves as those musical. And as she sings a bevy of Cole
Porter standards, among others, in a throaty, contralto voice, you are taken
back to a different era, but aware that you are also in an entirely new
one, one that she is in control of, if only momentarily. When she sings
the old standard "Angel Eyes," you imagine yourself in a smoke-filled
bistro, and as the lyrics "drink up all you happy people," fill
the room, you obey. And finally, when she sings the song's last line: "excuse
me, while I disappear." you are glad she is still there. |
