WOW! Five bones on stage at the same time!
We all know that piano players rarely ever play together, but have you ever
seen two trombone players in the same room? That's why Mark Mullins and
Craig Klein recruited Rick Trolsen, Steve Suter, and Brian O'Neill to join
forces for a five-piece all-bone horn section and a band with an unusual
format. Backed by a solid rhythm section with funky Meters drummer Russell
Batiste, Royal Fingerbowl bassist Matt Perrine and Have Soul Will Travel
guitarist Bert Cotton, Bonerama started making waves last spring with a
few key gigs and a Jazz Fest appearance. Though Mullins says that the band
was originally formed just for love of blowing the bone, it has since blossomed
into a record-worthy phenomenon. Repertoire-wise, Bonerama is a funk-oriented
project that sometimes leans a little to the jazz side or the rock side.
Crowd favorites such as Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" and the
recent classic "Blues for Ben" are bound to make it onto the set
list. ~ Christina Diettinger |
