Nothing SIC (sic) about this funk trio
SIC features three of New Orleans' finest musicians in pianist David Torkanowsky,
bassist George Porter, Jr. and drummer Johnny Vidocavich. Torkanowsky, who
spent 20 years with the great jazz band Astral Project before venturing
out on his own to pursue other projects, has deep, broadly based musical
roots. The son of a German symphony conductor and a Spanish flamenco dancer,
David drew upon these early European influences as he began his musical
apprenticeship with such traditional jazz bands of New Orleans as Albert
"Papa" French, David and Walter Lastie, Ernie Elly and the Preservation
Hall Jazz Band. Porter, whose musical career has spanned nearly 40 years,
was one of the original Meters, has his own project called The Runnin' Pardners,
is a member of the Funky Meters and has toured the world with his trusty
bass and is still one of the most sought after bassist for session work.
Vidocavich is considered among the finest drummers in a city that boasts
of a host of truly great drummers. He has been a staple behind the kit for
many years here in New Orleans. Collectively, this trio represents some
of the finest talent this city has to offer and is quickly garnering an
avid following and an interesting, funky scene.. |
